When Should You Order Personalized Christmas Gifts? What to Know About Holiday Deadlines
Share
Every year, shipping carriers announce their holiday deadlines, and every year, those dates catch people off guard. If you're ordering something personalized, there's an important detail to keep in mind: the date a carrier recommends for shipping isn't necessarily the date you should place your order.
A custom gift has to be made before it can be shipped. Here's what that means for your holiday planning, and how to make sure your gifts arrive in time.
Ordering and shipping are two different timelines
When you buy something that's already sitting on a warehouse shelf, it can ship the same day. Personalized gifts work differently. Before your gift ever reaches a carrier, it goes through several steps:
- Design: setting up your names, dates, photos, or wording
- Personalization: making sure every detail is correct and looks right
- Production: printing, pressing, or creating the finished piece
- Packaging: preparing it carefully so it arrives looking its best
Carrier delivery estimates only begin once the package is in their hands. So when you're planning, you're really looking at two timelines added together: how long it takes to make, plus how long it takes to arrive.
Why carrier deadlines aren't a guarantee
Published holiday shipping dates are recommendations, not promises. In December, carriers handle far more packages than usual, and delivery estimates can shift. Winter weather, service disruptions, and simple volume can all slow things down, sometimes without much warning.
That doesn't mean your gift won't make it. It just means a little extra cushion goes a long way, especially for something meaningful that can't easily be replaced at the last minute.
Work backward from the day you need it
The easiest way to plan is to start with the date you want the gift in hand and count backward. Before you order, ask yourself:
- When do I actually need it? Christmas morning, a holiday party, or a family gathering a few days earlier?
- How long does this item take to make? Check the processing time on the product page.
- How long will shipping take? Standard shipping usually takes several business days after your order ships.
- Do I have my details ready? Photos, names, spelling, and dates gathered ahead of time keep your order moving.
- Is there room for the unexpected? Build in a few extra days whenever you can.
One more tip: weekends and holidays don't count as business days, so a timeline that looks comfortable on the calendar can be shorter than it seems.
Which personalized gifts should you order first?
Not every gift takes the same amount of time, so it helps to shop in order.
Order these first: hoodie blankets, home décor, and keepsakes
Hoodie blankets take the longest of all, so put them at the very top of your list. Glass vases, glass cutting boards, kitchen gift sets, photo blankets, and memorial keepsakes come next. Our holiday vases were a customer favorite last Christmas, and a personalized hoodie blanket with a favorite pet's photo is the kind of gift that gets worn all winter long.

Believe Christmas Train Glass Vase$25
Personalized Christmas Glass Cutting Board$30
Monogram Kitchen Gift SetCutting board, towel, apron, and mug
Personalized Photo Memorial Ornament$20
Then: apparel, kitchen favorites, and small gifts
Personalized shirts, mugs, aprons, and coasters usually come together faster, which makes them great for coworkers, teachers, hostess gifts, and anyone you add to your list a little later. If you're ordering matching family shirts for holiday photos, start as early as you can. Group orders take more coordination, and you'll want time to confirm sizes and names with everyone.
